Engr. Bill Llonard Resurreccion, MEngg. IE, representing the University of the Cordilleras College of Engineering (UC-COE), showcased cutting-edge research on sustainable energy storage during the 87th Philippine Institute of Chemical Engineers (PIChE) National Convention held in Baguio City.
Resurreccion presented his research study, titled “Data-Driven Analysis of Degradation Mechanisms and State-of-Health Prediction in Lithium-Ion Batteries for Second-Life Applications.” The study establishes a materials-informed machine learning framework designed to predict the State-of-Health (SOH) of lithium-ion batteries, enabling data-backed decision-making for their potential second-life applications. Utilizing an open-source battery discharge dataset and a Random Forest regression model, the framework achieved remarkable accuracy with an R2 of 0.9734 and a Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of 0.0121.
By incorporating operational and engineered variables—such as voltage, current, temperature, power, load effects, and an internal-resistance proxy—the system translates predicted SOH values into application-based reuse categories. This data-driven approach offers a practical mechanism to extend battery utilization, reduce industrial e-waste, and optimize the lifecycle management of modern energy-storage technologies.
The initiative marks a significant contribution to the field of Energy Systems Engineering. Beyond battery management, its potential application across agricultural machinery, renewable energy systems, and grid-scale storage highlights the power of interdisciplinary engineering in building resilient, circular energy networks.
Furthermore, this institutional milestone directly aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—specifically SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). By leveraging machine learning to maximize energy storage efficiency and extend device lifespans, UC-COE continues to drive innovative engineering solutions that support sustainable infrastructure and foster a circular economy.
