UC College of Engineering Holds Faculty Workshop on Responsible Accommodation in Engineering Education

On October 1, 2026, the University of the Cordilleras (UC) College of Engineering conducted a Faculty Professional Development Workshop titled “Responsible Accommodation in Engineering Education,” facilitated by Ms. Demerie Joy Matias. The session gathered faculty members to examine pedagogical strategies that ensure inclusive, accessible, and equitable learning environments for engineering students with diverse learning needs.

The workshop focused on Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles, emphasizing multiple means of engagement, representation, and expression. Discussions highlighted moving beyond superficial fairness by addressing systemic barriers, such as evaluating time limits versus core engineering competencies, designing fair classroom accommodations, and making syllabus adjustments. Through group discussion tasks and interactive activities, faculty participants explored practical ways to integrate digital tools, assistive technologies, and flexible assessment models into technical coursework without compromising academic rigor.

This professional development initiative directly supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by embedding inclusivity into higher education practice. By training educators to implement accessible instructional methods and accommodate diverse learning styles, the workshop advances SDG 4 (Quality Education). Ensuring that all students—regardless of background or capability—receive equitable support aligns with SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), preparing a broader and more diverse cohort of future engineers. Furthermore, building faculty capacity through institutional collaboration reflects SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), demonstrating UC’s commitment to continuous educational enhancement.
