On April 6, 2025, BS ENSE students from the University of the Cordilleras – College of Engineering (UC-COE), through their participation in the Philippine Society of Sanitary Engineers (PSSE) student chapter collaboration, joined an exciting and educational visit to the Ambuklao Hydroelectric Power Plant. Organized in collaboration with PSSE-UBSC, PSSE-UCSC, PSSE-CAR, and PSSE-Baguio Student Chapters in commemoration of World Water Day, the activity provided students with valuable opportunities to explore the connection between responsible water management and sustainable energy generation.
The event featured an engaging Amazing Race, challenging dam-related problem-solving activities, and exclusive guided tours of the hydroelectric facility. Through these interactive experiences, UC-COE students gained a deeper appreciation of how water resources are managed and utilized to generate renewable electricity. The activities also highlighted the importance of protecting watersheds, conserving water, and recognizing water as a vital resource that supports communities, ecosystems, and essential energy needs.
Beyond the technical learning experience, the event encouraged students to practice conscious water usage in their daily lives. By understanding the role of water in hydroelectric power generation, students were reminded that water conservation extends beyond turning off faucets or reducing household consumption. It also involves protecting water sources, preventing pollution, minimizing waste, and making informed decisions that contribute to the long-term sustainability of shared natural resources. As future engineers, UC-COE students are encouraged to apply these lessons in developing responsible, innovative, and environmentally conscious solutions for their communities.
The activity supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation and SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy. By promoting responsible water use and raising awareness of sustainable water resource management, the event contributes to the objectives of SDG 6. Meanwhile, the visit to the Ambuklao Hydroelectric Power Plant highlighted the role of hydropower as a renewable energy source, reinforcing SDG 7’s commitment to access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy. Together, these goals emphasize the importance of managing water and energy resources responsibly for present and future generations.
UC-COE extends its appreciation to everyone who made this meaningful learning experience possible, particularly PSSE-CAR President Engr. Nancy E. Ulep, Engr. Jhomer Samoranos, SN Aboitiz, SK Ambuklao, BLGU Ambuklao, and the Ambuklao officials. Special recognition is also given to PSSE-UCSC President Karolyne Mae Legaspi, and the dedicated officers and organizers whose leadership and collaboration contributed to the success of the event.
Through initiatives like this, UC-COE continues to encourage students to become environmentally responsible engineers who recognize the value of water, champion sustainable energy, and contribute to building a more sustainable future.
